Safe Crossing Saves Lives

The bars come down, the red lights blink and the train comes. It can be a game with young children to count how many cars go by. It is also often a huge nuisance, a waste of precious time. It can take minutes, sometimes even an hour for the train to come and pass through with its numerous cars.

The law states we should wait at railroad crossings. We all know that, no matter how long, we should wait for a train to pass. You may find it shocking, but the Federal Railroad Administration estimates that a car/train collision occurs approximately every 12 minutes, injuring thousands of people and killing hundreds. These statistics are scary. What happened? How are all these accidents happening? Maybe we just need to take it back to safe driving and automotive safety.

First of all, each trip we take in our cars should be a safe one. Everyone should make sure the vehicles they are taking out on public roads are worthy to be there, and will not cause problems for ourselves, or anyone else. Some accidents occur because cars get stuck on railroad tracks, rendering the vehicle helpless with sometimes not enough time or not way to reach someone to warn the oncoming train. Sometimes, we just don’t want to wait and move across the tracks, even with bars down, which is against the law. If no one is looking you may not get a ticket, but you can absolutely get into an accident. Who is to know how close that train is? At ol-og-canada.org a drive can get helpful tips on keeping their car safe, and hence, the roadways a safer place to travel. With information on safe driving as well as automotive safety for the vehicle itself, you can at least do your part to make sure that the accident statistics go down, instead of up. Drive a safe car safely.

Our roads are crowded, cars are everywhere. Trains are still a more than viable mode of transportation, as well as a way to transport goods and services across our country. With both industries growing in leaps and bounds, most of us will encounter at least one railroad crossing during a day’s driving, sometimes two or three, or even more if you live in close proximity to a railroad crossing. It is a little time consuming to get stuck at a railroad crossing. We are all in a hurry. There are never enough hours in the day. We come to a railway crossing. The lights are blinking, but the guard rails have not yet come down. Why not just quickly drive across and no one is the wiser. What we seem to have forgotten is that those lights are put there for a reason. They are a warning that a train is approaching. What happens if your car gets stuck on the tracks, or the train suddenly comes? Trains are often carrying many, many cars and traveling at high speeds, and literally cannot stop if someone is stopped on the tracks.

In an average year there are hundreds of collisions at highway/railway crossings in Canada, some resulting in fatalities, resulting in costs in the millions as a result of these accidents.

Operation Lifesaver is a continuing public education program to heighten public awareness of this growing trend, with a goal of reducing the number of accidents and incidents associated with highway/railway crossings. Through education, enforcement, engineering and evaluation, Operation Lifesaver strives to make crossing at highway/railway crossings safer. Educating people on the dangers of crossing when the lights are blinking, enforcing laws that are made to protect the people, making sure the crossing is working properly and constantly evaluating ways to make the highway/railway crossings safer are all of the utmost importance, and in turn, will save lives.
